OWNER REVIEW · ★★★★★ · 5/5, based on my long-term overall assessment
What I bought: 16-inch MacBook Pro, M4 Pro (14-core CPU, 20-core GPU), 24GB unified memory, 512GB SSD, Space Black. Purchased from Apple in June 2025 for $2,499 before tax.
I bought a new MacBook Pro because my old computer had become an obstacle. The machine it replaced, an M1-era MacBook, had begun feeling slow, and I could no longer persuade myself that simply tolerating it was a virtue. A laptop is a peculiar thing to economize on when you spend much of your working life in front of it.
So I bought the 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M4 Pro chip. A month later, I had an uncomplicated verdict: I loved it. I called it the best laptop I had ever used. That may sound uncritical, but it is a strikingly rare reaction to an expensive appliance that mostly earns its keep by disappearing into the workday.
The expense of not being annoyed
Apple charged $2,499 before tax for my configuration. The 16-inch display was a deliberate choice. I’ve found a bigger screen easier on my eyes, and the older machine’s deteriorating battery experience had become another reason to replace it. Those are less glamorous considerations than benchmark charts, but they are arguably more important to someone who writes for a living.
The actual configuration matters. This wasn’t Apple’s most expensive specification: it had 24GB of unified memory and a 512GB SSD. The M4 Pro version included a Liquid Retina XDR display, three Thunderbolt 5 ports, an HDMI output, an SDXC slot and MagSafe charging. Those particulars are drawn from my Apple order confirmation, not a lab test.
What I can and can’t tell you
My enthusiasm is firsthand. The claim that it was the best laptop I’d owned was mine, made after a month with the computer. But I did not record a controlled battery rundown, thermal measurements or standardized performance benchmarks for this review. I won’t retrofit numbers, fan-noise impressions or stopwatch results to a verdict I gave at the time.
That distinction doesn’t make the verdict meaningless. It tells you what kind of verdict it is. This is a writer’s owner review: the machine solved a problem that had become increasingly obvious every working day, and I didn’t regret the splurge.
The verdict
For me, the 16-inch M4 Pro MacBook Pro was a five-star purchase because it turned an irritating necessity back into a computer I wanted to use. There are surely cheaper ways to write a sentence. But when a tool occupies so much of your life, comfort and confidence are not trivial luxuries.
Pros: A larger screen that suited my needs; a major personal upgrade from an aging machine; a configuration I remained delighted to own.
Cons: Expensive at $2,499 before tax; the 512GB storage tier may feel tight to people storing large video or photo libraries.
Disclosure: I purchased this computer myself. The accompanying image is an Apple press photograph of the MacBook Pro family, not my personal device. This owner review draws on my recorded experience rather than new laboratory tests.
